Job Description

Overall Job Purpose

To lead, manage and develop the DENS Bike Shop into a successful social enterprise that provides excellent training opportunities for participants whilst raising income and to further develop the project.

 

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Overall day to day running of the bike shop; including  management of stock, and  implementing  efficient  schedule to service bikes
  • To manage record systems ensuring that they are complete and accurate to the work carried out.
  • Overall responsibility for Health and Safety within the Bike Shop
  • To support participants to undertake duties within the project
  • With other relevant staff ensure participants have a training plan and support them to implement it.
  • To focus on the customer experience so that we build our brand, services and products through positive word of mouth recommendations.
  • Working with DENS Fundraising and Communications Team to use multiple means of communication to serve customers and the community.
  • To record all sales and purchases
  • To organise the collection of donated bikes and delivery of bikes to customers when required.  
  • To actively recruit and develop volunteers for the project.
  • To develop opportunities to grow the business, including funding for bike related deliverables.
  • To maintain equipment and ensure a clean, secure and safe work environment.

Education & Training

  • A good standard of Education
  • CYTECH L2 or equivalent qualification with at least 2 years in professional cycle maintenance role

Knowledge & Experience

 

  • Retail or consumer business experience with focus on leading, managing and growing a business.
  • Experience of   supporting or training staff or volunteers
  • Experience of recording sales and basic financial management  .
  • Previously worked with suppliers and stock ordering.
  • Understand the issues  and challenges for those facing homelessness and social exclusion
  • Understanding of the barriers to employment for vulnerable adults

 

  • Managed other cycle mechanics overseeing their development and productivity.
  • Worked within bicycle refurbishment projects.
  • Has experience of achieving grant outputs not directly related to cycle maintenance.
  • Experience of supporting vulnerable adults in an employment setting
  • Experience of working in the public or charity  sector

Skills & Abilities

  • Good IT skills in order to record necessary purchases and sales.
  • Experience of financial reporting.
  • Able to work on a wide variety of bicycles with a clear understanding of correct maintenance for all bicycles from vintage to high-end performance machines.
  • Has previously used and programmed shop EPOS systems.
  • Understands the functions of social media platforms and how they can be used to raise awareness of project-based work
  • Has some understanding of working on a broad variety of bicycles and would otherwise know where to find a cycle maintenance solution.
  • Has worked within a retail environment using EPOS systems.
  • Ability to work with colleagues across the organisation to promote the values and overall objectives of the organisation

 

Personal Qualities

  • Has excellent communication skills; verbal, online and via email.
  • Understand the issues  and challenges for those facing homelessness and social exclusion
  • Understand the barriers to employment for vulnerable adults
  • Committed to helping people re-build their lives 
  • Self motivating with a passion to develop the project whilst understanding the challenges

 

General

  • A driving licence and able to drive a small van
