FAQs

  • I'm looking to become a bike mechanic and work on customers' bikes - what qualification(s) do I need?

Our Technical two qualification is widely consdiered as the industry standard for professional cycle technicians worldwide and is also the one that employers within the industry will tend to ask for, i.e. 'must hold Technical two or equivalent.'

You should be aiming to get to this level to be able to safely, competently, confidently and efficiently work on customer bikes, while adhering to relevant standards and legislation and also completing any relevant safety checks and paperwork.

To get to Technical two you would first need to complete Theory one and Technical one - practical.

  • Can I skip courses and book straight onto Technical two/Technical e-bike/Technical three?

In short, no, we expect those attending our courses to have completed the previous course as a pre-requisite. So before Technical two you should complete Technical one first, and then after Technical two you can go onto either Technical e-bike or Technical three, or both.

Most of our training providers schedule courses separately, so you complete Technical one (which is comprised of Theory one (online) and Technical one - practical (2 days)) separately from Technical two (8 days) and so on.

However at Activate Cycle Academy they offer a 10 day Technical two ‘package’ which covers the content from the Technical one – practical course within those 10 days, but only results in the Technical two certificate at the end (which is the higher one and seen as the industry benchmark standard for professional cycle technicians). So only in this instance do you not need to book the Technical one - practical course separately, however you would still benefit from completing Theory one (online) before the 10 days of practical training.

  • I've been in the cycles industry/worked in a bike shop for many years, do I still need to complete the full course(s)?

If you feel that you already meet the competency of the Technical one or Technical two course(s), then we offer assessment only options for these two qualifications. This can be discussed with and booked through our training providers.

Having said this if you have never completed a formal bike mechanics qualification before then we would still recommend completing the full courses. Benefits of this include making sure that you are completing work to the current industry standards and manufacturer recommendations, ensuring that you have not picked up any bad habbits over the years, learning tips an tricks to make you more efficient at your job, and many more.

  • Do you deliver your training courses online?

Our introductory course, Theory one, is online and can be completed anywhere as long as you have an internet connection.

All of our courses after Theory one are practical courses and need to be completed with one of our training providers at one of their training centres.

  • Do you deliver any training courses near __________?

For our introductory online course, Theory one, this can be completed anywhere as long as you have an internet connection.

All of our courses after Theory one are practical courses and need to be completed with one of our training providers at one of their training centres. To check where your nearest training centre is you can search using this map here.

  • I completed a Cytech course and have left feedback but have not yet received my certificate - when should I expect it?

Course attendee records are processed by us together with our training providers in batches, usually once a month either at the start or end of a month*. Providing you have left feedback following your course**, once records are processed certificates are sent out via email to the email address that was registered for the course.

*With Activate Cycle Academy records are processed within the first three weeks of the following month after the completion date of your course, e.g. if you completed your course in January you should expect your certificate by the third week of February.

**Feedback should be left via the link that would have been sent to the email address you registered for the course with.
